Calgary isn’t just “growing fast” — it’s growing big.
According to ATB Economics’ Alberta Population Growth Report (May 2025), Alberta has been Canada’s population growth star, and Calgary is one of the main engines driving that story.
Calgary’s Headline Stat (2024)
As of July 1, 2024, the Calgary CMA population hit 1,778,881.
That’s not a “nice little prairie city” anymore — that’s a major metro.
Calgary’s Growth Since 2014
From 2014 to 2024, Calgary added 392,813 residents, a growth rate of +28.3% — the largest increase among Alberta’s major metro areas.
That kind of growth doesn’t happen quietly. It shows up everywhere:
housing demand
rents
traffic
schools
hospitals
and yes… bidding wars (depending on the property type and price range)
Alberta’s Bigger Picture (and why it matters to Calgary)
ATB reports that Alberta’s population grew by 4.4% in 2024, the fastest pace since 1981, adding 204,000 people in a single year.
Over just 24 months, Alberta added almost 378,000 new residents.
Where do you think most of those people end up?
ATB points out that most of Alberta’s population growth has been concentrated in the major metros, especially Calgary and Edmonton.
